RĂDĂCINI ALE CREDINŢEI... - ROOTS OF PIETY

my uncle Michael, the monk, considered that this is the most important christian song... at least orthodox and greek-catholic churches...
I picked this old song, because this church is from the historical and stylistic beginnings of christian churches, on the lands of roman and dacians descendants...

even when I was traveling with the bicycle, I used to load my luggage with my cameras, but also with maps and reference materials about the places and the monuments what I was going to visit...
I admit that I arrived at Densuş, being aware that is a special place, even unique, from several points of view: architectural-artistic, technical-constructive, and as a place for praying...

it's the oldest Romanian church in which there are services for seven centuries... continuous services, for seven hundred years!

it's the oldest Romanian church that is entirely built in stone, including the roof covering...
as a building, it's an immense LEGO play, or a puzzle, but from different sets, that were not ment to be combined, though assembled in unique kaleidoscope: processed stone, volcanic spongy rocks, basalt plates, finished marble blocks, bricks... I've never seen walls of so different, as size and material, weaved alltogether...
it is so, first of all beacause the church is built over an ancient Roman temple, and important pieces are marble tombstones, columns, neckings, even two stone lions, all of them from Roman monuments in the area - Sarmizegetusa, ancient capital of Dacia is only 11 kilometres from here...

as a house of worship, it has an interesting, unique configuration, architecturally talking...
in fact, one can see that it is part of the early christian churches... some say it's from the XIIIth century;
the walls and structure belong either to mausoleum of a Roman general, or a temple of Mars; so, the beginnings of the construction are much older than XIIIth century...
the interior volume is strange for a church... the central tower has a very small diameter, because it initially was the chimney for the ritual sacrifices from the temple, for example...

for me, the most impressive thing is the superimposing of the mystic christian space, over the pre-christian space...
you can see it, in the volumes, in materials; it's a mixture that is very obvious...
I've never seen something like this before: talking about interior space, proportions (Iwas not allowed to take pictures :(  )
I didn't see stones, engraved slabs, that are not of christian origin, in a church and it's structural build...
I am convinced that the local craftsmen, in the mornings of the christianity, they didn'nt have much models to follow... their church, as some others in region (from Streisângeorgiu, Geoagiu), they don't quite fit in the types that develped later: basilica or greek cross...
